1. Google Threatens to Shut Down Search in Australia if Digital News Code Goes Ahead (The Guardian)

Google threatens to remove its search engine from Australia if a code forcing it to negotiate payments to news media companies goes ahead. If Google follows through on its threat 19 million Australians will no longer be able to use Google for search. Facebook also hinted at a similar move with regard to its news feed.

2. Verizon Media Wins Microsoft Display SSP Business From AppNexus (AdExchanger)

After Microsoft determined that using the Verizon Media supply-side platform (SSP) for its display inventory increased CPMs in September, it officially switched – the companies said on Thursday – making Verizon Media its primary SSP for MSN and Outlook inventory across nine markets, including the United States.

3. Parler Loses Bid to Require Amazon to Restore Service (Reuters)

Parler’s demand for Amazon.com Inc to restore web hosting services for the social media platform was rejected by a US judge. The judge said that Parler was unlikely to prove Amazon breached its contract or violated antitrust law by suspending its services.

4. Publishers Must Gain Direct Control over their Readers in Great Identity Shake-up: Scott Howe, LiveRamp CEO (AdExchanger)

Brands are in the process of reinventing their identities in the wake of the deprecation of third-party cookies in Chrome. Scott Howe, CEO of Liveramp finds great opportunities for publishers in this process. While trying to understand how advertisers address their audience, he said, the publisher community should get direct relationships with their readers they lost to the ad tech companies who acted as middlemen and grabbed revenue for the past 20 years.

5. Pebble Founder Launches Beeper, A Universal Chat App that Works with iMessage and Others (TechCrunch)

Pebble founder and Y Combinator Partner, Eric Migicovsky, is revisiting a concept introduced decades ago by a software program called Trillian. They are launching an app, Beeper, where users can connect with 15 different messaging services, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Instagram, Skype, and others – even, with a few tricks, iMessage.

6. Marketing Platform SOCi Raised $80 million in Series D Aims at Massive Expansion (AdExchanger)

SOCi, a platform that helps national brands manage their marketing locally closed its Series D at $80 million taking the company’s total funding to just over $137 million since 2014 said Afif Khoury, SOCi’s CEO and cofounder. These funds will be spent on new product development, sales, marketing and strategic M&A.

7. Alphabet Shuts Down Loon Internet Balloon Company (TechCrunch)

Alphabet was exploring the idea of using a fleet of balloons to beam high-speed internet in remote parts of the world. The parent firm of Google is finally done with the exploration. They are winding down Loon, which was a nine-year-old project, and a two-and-a-half-year-old spin-off firm. It failed in finding a sustainable business model and partners for one of its most prominent moonshot projects.
