1. Google Announces Global Deal with Reuters (Google Blog)

Google’s VP Product Management, Brad Bender, announced that Reuters has joined their $1 billion Google News Showcase initiative. The program was launched last year by Google to help support publications in producing, distributing, and explaining useful information to the users in new ways. Since then, Google has signed agreements with nearly 450 publications across a dozen countries.

2. Popularity of Local News Surges Among Gen Z and Millennials (Variety)

According to a Nielsen report, Gen Z and millennial readers are flocking to local news stations for breaking news events like the COVID pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement and the riot on Capitol Hill. Viewership for news skyrocketed by 100% among the 18 to 24-year-olds and 30% among the younger audience aged 12-17.

3. Valve and Five Game Publishers fined Millions by EU (The Verge)

Five PC video game publishers, including Valve, ZeniMax, Capcom, and Bandai Namco, were fined by the European Commission a total of around $9.5 million for the restriction of cross-border game sales in the European Economic Area. The Commission stated the companies geo-blocked around 100 PC video games and prevented them to be played outside certain EU countries. This was against the EU’s Digital Single Market rules.

4. Ad-free Subscription Model made Netflix Popular (AdExchanger)

Netflix added 37 million net new subscribers in 2020 taking its total to 200 million subscribers worldwide. Despite its impressive subscriber base, it accounts for less than 10% of television viewing time in the US and only a fraction of paid TV penetration in most parts of the world. Netflix is confident of attracting more viewers in the future, said co-CEO Reed Hastings during the company’s Q4 2020 report. Ad-free, subscription-only model is the success mantra said Greg Peters, chief product officer at Netflix.

5. 58% Rise in Tubi’s Streaming Hours in 2020; Half of its viewers younger than 35 (Deadline)

Fox-owned streaming service Tubi offers ad supported, free streaming services. It hit 2.5 billion hours in 2020, an increase of 58% from 2019. More than half of its viewers are aged less than 35, and 39% of Tubi’s total base of 33 million monthly active users are Black, Hispanic and Asian. Fox has positioned Tubi as a complement to its traditional linear network that offers brands access to niche audiences through its streaming services.

6. TikTok Introduces New Video Q&A Feature (Tech Crunch)

TikTok is testing a new Q&A feature for creators to connect with their audience more intimately via text or video. This is an experimental feature available to a few selected creators for now.

7. IBM’s Bob Lord: Exploring Role for AI in the Cookie-less World (AdExchanger)

According to Bob Lord, IBM’s SVP of cognitive applications, Artificial Intelligence can help big enterprises make sense of massive data and protect consumer privacy. He cautions however that organizations need to learn how to make large amounts of data accessible, useful and productive in a post-cookie world. Artificial Intelligence emerged as one of the key players in executing marketing plans like audience modeling and campaign optimization.
