1. Local OTT Advertising Is An Untapped $137B Opportunity (AdExchanger)

Over-the-top (OTT) viewership is surpassing linear TV and both national and local advertisers are rushing to catch up. Local OTT advertising revenue may only reach $1.2 billion in 2021, while linear TV will account for $15.7 billion, or 11.4% of local advertising revenue in the US. Despite this, there is $137 billion untapped in local OTT advertising.

2. Meta’s Biggest Metaverse App ‘Horizon Worlds’ Opens To Public (TheVerge)

Horizon Worlds, Meta’s VR social network, is now accessible to the public. Users aged 18 and older in the US and Canada will be able to download the free Quest app without an invite. It requires a Facebook account and allows you to hang out with up to 20 people in a virtual location at the same time.

3. New Bill Require Social Platforms To Share Data With Academics (MediaPost)

Lawmakers proposed a bill for social media sites to disclose some data with academics. The Platform Accountability and Transparency Act (PATA) would require social platforms with at least 25 million monthly users to disclose data with university-affiliated academics whose research projects have been authorized by the National Science Foundation.

4. Salesforce, Vox Media Partner To Stream Pivot On Salesforce+ (AdWeek)

Starting in early 2022, the Vox Media podcast Pivot will go on camera, with parts of the footage airing exclusively on Salesforce+, the company’s new streaming platform. Salesforce will become the presenting sponsor of Pivot video till 2022 as part of the relationship, however financial specifics of the deal were not released.

5. Pay And Opportunities Are Not Fair In Advertising Industry (AdAge)

A World Federation of Advertisers report stated less than half of advertising professionals (only 43%) believe their companies provide promotion chances to the most deserving, and even fewer (just 35%) believe they provide equal compensation for equal effort. One-third of marketers said, “I have observed inappropriate behavior within my company.”

6. Facebook, Instagram Launch ‘Year In Review’ Feature Globally (TechCrunch)

Meta has launched “Year in Review” features on Facebook and Instagram. Users may post their customized “Year Together” card on Facebook, emphasizing people that meant the most to them in 2021. Instagram users may add a personalized end-of-year “Playback” time capsule to their IG Story. The feature is available worldwide until December 30th.

7. Comcast Adds YouTube TV To Xfinity Flex (Variety)

YouTube TV is now accessible on Comcast’s Xfinity Flex, the cable company’s video platform for broadband-only users. YouTube TV competes with Comcast’s Xfinity TV, although Comcast is increasingly a broadband-first company. Comcast announced 29.4 million home internet users and 17.8 million television subscribers at the end of the third quarter.

8. Amazon Fined $1.3B For Abusing Market Domination In Italy (Reuters)

The Italian antitrust regulator said on Thursday that it has fined Amazon 1.13 billion euros ($1.28 billion) for suspected market dominance abuse, one of the largest penalties issued on a US internet company in Europe. Amazon stated that it “strongly disagreed” with the Italian regulator’s decision and that it would file an appeal.
