Due to alleged threats posted on TikTok, school districts across the US cancelled classes on 17 December. Districts in California, Texas, Minnesota, and Missouri have announced plans to close on Friday in retaliation. Elsewhere, districts have stated they would increase police presence or have texted parents to say they are reviewing the complaints.

2. YouTube Adds Places Mentioned Link In Videos For Creators (MediaPost)

YouTube introduced a link format in the video description box that allows viewers to learn more about the locations featured in the video in an “easy and visual” way, according to the firm. Previously, if authors wanted to include places referenced in the video, they had to manually add TextMap links.

3. OpenX Receive $2M Fine After Child Data Collection (AdWeek)

The internet ad exchange OpenX was fined $2 million after the Federal Trade Commission said it “secretly” gathered data, including children’s personal information. OpenX was accused of stealing geolocation data from mobile devices, even when users have declined to provide their location information.

TikTok will change its recommendation algorithm to stop giving viewers too much of the same material, as social media platforms are being scrutinized for their potential to harm children. To preserve users’ mental health, TikTok will prevent pushing too much information from topics like severe dieting, melancholy, or breakups, to individual users.

Spotify is taking a leaf from Apple by adding a five-star user ratings system for podcasts, a new tool for sorting through Spotify’s 3.2 million podcast titles to locate the most popular episodes. Spotify has begun rolling out ratings for podcasts, which the company claims will increase podcast discoverability by spotlighting popular programs.

6. Mobile SSP Kargo Begins Blocking Ads On Misinformation Sites (MediaPost)

Kargo will use NewsGuard ratings to ” ensure mobile advertisers are protected from placing ads on misinformation and disinformation sources.” It claims to be the first “mobile-focused” SSP. In its initial research of Kargo’s supply, NewsGuard found that the news and information sites in its inventory pool averaged a “trust score of 91 out of 100.”

7. Russia Fines Meta, Twitter, And TikTok Over Banned Content (Reuters)

A Moscow court penalized Twitter, Facebook owner Meta Platforms, and TikTok for failing to erase information that the government deems illegal, the latest in a line of sanctions against international internet companies. Meta Platforms was fined a total of 13 million roubles ($176,926) in three distinct administrative cases.

8. Spotify Acquires Australia’s Whooshkaa Podcast Company (Axios)

Spotify acquired Whooshkaa, a podcast technology platform that converts current content into podcasts for radio stations. The deal will help Whooshkaa’s growth as well as Spotify’s ad inventory. Megaphone, a podcast monetization firm that Spotify bought for $235 million last year, will use Whooshkaa’s “broadcast-to-podcast” technology.
