1. Twitter Acquires Newsletter Platform Revue to Facilitate Long Content Experience (NYT)

Twitter has acquired newsletter publishing platform Revue for an undisclosed amount, as it looks to foray into long-form content and subscription-oriented products. Post the acquisition, Twitter will be making Revue’s Pro features available for free to all accounts and will be lowering the cut it takes from paid newsletters to 5% from the current 6% fee.

According to Digiday, “the fight over newsletters has ratcheted up because the rest of the media world is starting to understand the value of a direct connection in an environment where users are engaged and less distracted.” Research by Adobe found that the average person spends over five hours per workday engaging with their inbox.

4. YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki Says Growing Creator Economy Top Priority for 2021 (YouTube Blog)

YouTube has paid out more than $30 billion to creators, artists, and media organizations over the last three years, according to a new letter published by CEO Susan Wojcicki. She also highlights that the number of new channels that joined YouTube’s Partner Program (YPP) in 2020 more than doubled over the year before.
 

5. IMDb TV, Amazon’s Free Streaming Service, Now Available On Roku (Variety)

Roku inked a deal with Amazon to bring IMDb TV free, ad-supported streaming service to the Roku platform in the US. The terms of the deal with Amazon were not disclosed, however, under Roku’s standard distribution agreements, it takes 30% of ad inventory on partner channels.

6. Verizon Media Announces First YOY Growth After Yahoo Buy (AdExchanger)

Verizon Media Group reported Q4 2020 revenue of $2.3 Billion, up 11.4% from the same period last year. According to Verizon CFO Matt Ellis political, consumer products, technology and retail advertisements were the primary growth engines. This is the first quarter of year-over-year growth since the wireless giant acquired Yahoo in 2017 for $4.48 Billion.

7. Firefox 85 blocks Flash, Rolls Out Protection from Supercookies (ZDNet)

Mozilla released Firefox 85, a new version of the browser that removes support for the Adobe Flash Player plugin and boosts privacy protections by adding more comprehensive defences against “supercookies”.
